Upgrading Wordpress 2.7+

By Darren On February 11, 2009 Under wordpress

I cannot believe how simple Wordpress have made upgrading your blogs.  With the release of Wordpress 2.7.1, you can upgrade from 2.7 by visiting the tools panel in your admin sidebar, choosing ‘Upgrade’ and then choosing the automatic option.  Wordpress then handles everything for you.

It seems strange, before being offered the chance to upgrade to 2.7.1 I had to use the auto-upgrade option to re-install 2.7.  You may need to do the same thing, but I highly recommend upgrading as there are 68 fixes that have been implemented.

I would highly recommend backing up your database and any custom theme files before performing the upgrades (just in case something goes wrong).  I have upgraded two blogs and both worked without any problems whatsoever (besides having to re-install 2.7 first).

If you are a little wary of using the automatic feature, then you can still download the package and install it manually from here.

The control panel in 2.7 is a big improvement over the previous versions. Beware though you have to turn off your plugins before updating, I updated one blog manually and it wiped the whole site out, just a white screen. If you have automatic update as long as you turn all the plugins off except the auto update plugin it updates nicely..

I agree about the backup thing. I moved to 2.7 and ended up nearly imploding in plugin hell.
My recommendation is to disable plugins and make sure you have a backup.
Otherwise wordpress 2.7 is awesome blogging goodness.

GregR is absolutely right – make sure you turn off your plugins before the upgrade.

Believe me, I know….

Well, wordpress 2.7 is the coolest version so far. I love auto upgrade and the plug-in installer is simply awesome. People will forget about FTP and cpanel file uploading if other CMS also adopt these features :D

Well, you have to turn off your plugins before the upgrading. or you may also use the WP auto upgrading plugin for this purpose. Hope this will work.

WOW that was FAST! Thank you so much for posting this! Before I found this article, I was quite intimidated to upgrade my website. The instructions of other people seem so complicated. This is my first upgrade since my website is !fairly new. And you made it a whole lot easier! Keep it up!
