While I can appreciate that the bottle-cap icons wouldn’t work for everyone (and in some cases it may not only be a question of style but of the type of business involved), I’m puzzled as to why some sites, particularly blogs, still don’t use icons (regardless of style) or some other sharing tool when they are so readily available and easily installed. Maybe I’ve just gotten spoiled; I’m so accustomed to automated bookmarking/sharing that I get annoyed when I have no choice but to do it manually.

I have tracked this and have definitely noticed an increase in visitors once I added the icons to my posts.

The idea isn’t to use them as avatars . . . they are placed beneath your own blog posts as links to the relevant social bookmarking services. When a visitor clicks on an icon that they recognise (Digg for example) they are taken to the Digg website where they can help to promote your post.

Yes it is a valid point. Who ever comes to visit and read the blogpost will definitely click on the bookmarking symbol so that they can come to the site again without any problem.And i really your help of providing the list of the sysmbols.Thanks for sharing.

Bottle caps in the picture above are really a kind of dull look, will they use the same of stuff there in the websites or will think about some clarity. By the way i really dont like the idea as these are only looks good if you only keep them as your avatar or icon for a website where you can use a small pic in display.

Hi Sue,
People should recognise the icons from the websites logo that is being used. The main difference is that the icons should blend well with your websites content. The Bottle Cap icons I have featured in this post would look very out of place on this blog, however using a set of blue hand-drawn icons would complement my design much more.

But don’t you think that if the icons are kept all the same through out the web then people wil start to recognise them rather than having to work out which one is facebook or You tube or My Space?
