Decreasing Alexa Rank - Is it Worth Anything?

July 9, 2008 · Filed Under General

In just two days my Alexa Rank has dropped again, this time by 1,404,767 points.  This means that my site has overtaken just over 1.4million other websites in popularity.  Some people will say that Alexa rank doesn’t mean all that much, but I believe it is slowly becoming more accurate.

Alexa ranking is calculated by aggregating statistics of websites visited by people who have the Alexa toolbar installed on their systems.  The more of your visitors who have the toolbar installed, then the greater you will rank on the Alexa system.  It is thought that ‘webmaster-related’ websites are the ones who achieve higher ranks easier as they will be the ones interested in increasing their own ranks and will have the toolbar installed.

Services such as PayPerPost (not in use in this blog) rely on a blogs Alexa Ranking in order to determine how much a paid post would cost for an advertiser.  If you look at blogs with high authority within the community such as John Chow (Alexa Rank 29,534), Problogger (18,171) and Dosh Dosh (56,068), you can see that their Alexa rank is in-keeping with the popularity of their blogs and I am going to continue using it as a measure of this blogs popularity and continue to improve it in as many ways as possible.

I mentioned Dosh Dosh previously, and they have an amazing post which outlines many ways in which you can increase Alexa Rank.  I’m going to be following their tips this week and I will let you know which items I believe have worked for me.

Sure your points make sense. But if Alexa rankings are only popular becuase pay per post use this as a basis to judge the costs of posts, well its not to popular than!

I think there are numerous flaws in the system. Although i will be the first to admit a good alexa ranking, will help sell a site!

Question.. you mentioned your alexa rank dropped by 1,404,767 meaning you have overtaken 1.4million other sites in popularity..

So why does a smaller number mean higher authority as you previous examples John Chow and Problogger.. I could probably google this, but I’m lazy..

I have never worried about Alexa rank at all. Of course, I run a small, local website so I don’t get many visitors but the ones that do visit are typically very interested in my services. that is the nice thing about local websites for your services, not many hits are required to make a little bit of money (provided you actually do the service that you are advertising).

I personally think Alexa is stupid. Just because you don’t have the most traffic out of all niches doesn’t mean you don’t have the most traffic in your specific niche. It should break the blogs down by category.

I have often wondered the same about Alexa’s data. I would also look at some of their competitors as some have an opt in for the webmasters themselves instead of relying on the user to install a toolbar and risk possible tampering. Ones that I use regularly are Compete.com and Quantcast.com. They are both getting some fairly accurate data as compared to say Google Webmaster Tools.

Hmmm, I wouldn’t be too concerned about alexa rankings, you are the one that know the traffic your get, so if alexa rank dropped but not your real traffic, why worry about it?

I think Alexa rank becomes much more accurate as you get into the hundreds of visitors a day range - if sites only have a few visitors a day the chances of them having something installed that Alexa can track is quite low.

Thanks for the link to the Dosh Dosh article.

Yeah, I agree with DavidC- Alexa is fine, but only one way of measuring. Just because its dropping in rank for your site doesn’t necessarily have a bearing on the overall health of your site. And why should it?

Alexa rank is worthless for seo of any website,
It just increasing not per the website quality, but alexa rank is increase as per the hits to the sites.

Alexa rank doesn’t have a good algoritm yet to calculate the real ranks. I saw they made some modification about 2 months ago, but it is the same thing. The sites still go up and down if you want to.
